Tips for Selecting Children's Clothing Sizes

Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at

Are you a first-time parent, or a relative or friend to one? Do you dread shopping for baby clothes because you don't know how to read the sizes? It's okay. Believe it or not, you are not alone. Just visit the children's section of your favorite department store and look at all of the bewildered faces around you. They too are struggling to find the right size clothing for the little one in their life.

Don't let your frustrations ruin the excitement surrounding this joyous event. Here are some tips to keep in mind when you are shopping for baby clothes:

  • Most baby clothing sizes are based on age. The age ranges are: preemie, 0 to 3 months or newborn, 3 to 6 months, 6 to 9 months, 9 to 12 months, 12 months, 18 months, and 24 months. The fit may vary from brand to brand, so be careful.

  • If you're not sure of which size you should buy, you might want to double the baby's age and buy that size. Babies grow fast. The last thing you want to do is buy clothes that the baby won't be able to wear a month later. So if you're buying for a 3-month-old baby, get clothes in the size of 6-months. This way, the baby can grow into the clothes.

  • Babies grow at different rates. Some may grow out instead of up. In this case, you may want to buy clothes according to the baby's length and weight. Some clothing tags include this information. If not, try to find a size chart for the brand of baby clothes that you're interested in online. This could save you a lot of time and trouble down the road.

Choosing the Right Baby Clothes

Monday, November 23, 2009 at

Expectant mothers can always use three things: a nanny, diapers and clothes. You may not be able to provide a nanny, but you can handle the diapers and clothes. But how do you buy clothes for someone who can't express their likes and dislikes? Good question. In this situation one thing that you can do is talk to the mom.

Don't be afraid to ask the expectant mother in your life about the types of baby clothes she is looking for. Ask her about the colors and styles that she would like to see her child in. If you think that asking that would be too forward, you don't have to ask. Just consider the mom's style and go from there.

For example, if mom is very trendy or flamboyant, she would probably appreciate trendy baby clothes in bright colors. If mom is passionate about the environment, she will definitely appreciate organic baby clothes. And if mom is a little more modern minimalist, she will probably want baby clothes that come in muted tones and don't have busy patterns.
